You like each other. But are you looking for the same thing?
Attraction does not always tell you whether you expect the same thing from a relationship. Seven simple questions to understand each other better, without turning the conversation into an interview.
Attraction makes you want to get closer. It does not always tell you whether you expect the same thing from a relationship.
Without turning the conversation into an interview, a few questions can help you understand each other better. The point is not to get all the right answers, but to leave room for honest ones.
1. What would you like to live right now?
A lasting relationship, an encounter with no particular expectation, or simply time to discover someone: it is better to understand the other person’s intention than to guess it.
“Right now, would you like to build something, or rather see where a meeting can lead?”
2. What pace suits you for getting to know someone?
Some people like to talk often. Others prefer to take their time. A different pace can be discussed, as long as you can say it.
“Do you prefer to chat a bit before meeting, or to meet fairly quickly?”
3. What matters most to you in a couple?
Independence, shared moments, trust, affection or communication can take different places for different people.
“What makes you feel good in a relationship?”
4. How do you prefer to handle a disagreement?
Needing a moment to think and wanting to talk right away are two different reactions. Knowing them can avoid some misunderstandings.
“When something bothers you, do you prefer to talk about it right away or to step back a little?”
5. How much room do you want to keep for your own life?
A relationship can leave room for friends, activities and time alone. The right balance is built together.
“For you, what does a nice week as a couple look like?”
6. Which plans matter to you?
Where to live, children, moving, lifestyle: some plans have concrete consequences for a relationship.
There is no need to cover everything in the first exchange. But a topic that is essential to you deserves a conversation at the right time.
7. What would you like to discover about the other person?
Leaving room for curiosity helps you move beyond lists of criteria.
“What makes you want to see someone again after a first date?”
To wrap up
You do not need to ask these seven questions in a row. Pick the one that sounds like you and let the conversation unfold.
The goal is to understand whether you both want to move in a compatible direction.
